The situation. Arjun is 22 and lives in Pune. He wants a business degree in Melbourne. A friend told him to arrive on a visitor visa and sort the student visa once he is here.
What I check first. Visitor visa holders now have to apply for a Student visa from outside Australia, and be outside Australia when it is granted. So the plan is closed before it starts. I check that first, because it decides everything else.
The options. Choose a course that keeps his future open, not just the cheapest one. Lodge from Pune with funds and course evidence that match. Time the application around his intake.
Age and English. At 22 he is in the 18 to 24 band. That scores 25 on the federal test, and 300 on Victoria's test (ages 20 to 29). His English is Competent, which scores 0 on both. It does not stop him studying. It is the cheapest thing to improve before he ever thinks about points.
My caution. A new visa is never guaranteed. The government charge for most students is A$2,500 (as at 1 July 2026). I tell him that on day one.

Illustrative situation. The names and details are fictional.
The situation. Rahim's course ends in eight months. His university has given him extra time to finish his Bachelor at the same provider. He is not sure whether he has to leave Australia to apply again.
What I check first. Needing up to 12 more months with the same provider is one of the few cases where a current student can still lodge in Australia. So I check his exact dates, his provider and his course level before I say anything.
The options. If the exemption applies, lodge in Australia with the new confirmation of enrolment or the provider's extension letter. If a leave of absence pushes him past 12 months, the answer changes.
Age and English. Rahim is 24. When he turns 25 he moves into the 30-point age band on the federal test. His Proficient English scores 10 federally and 100 in Victoria. None of this affects the visa today. It shapes what he does after graduating.
My caution. Dates decide this. One extra month on the wrong side of the line changes the whole plan. I would rather check twice than guess.

Illustrative situation. The names and details are fictional.
The situation. Priya took a leave of absence and now needs 14 more months to finish. She wants to stay in Australia while she applies.
What I check first. Needing more than 12 months, or changing provider after the visa was granted, means she cannot apply from inside Australia. She has to lodge from outside, and she has to be outside when the visa is granted. Home Affairs updated its page on this on 22 October 2026.
The options. Plan the trip so the grant lands while she is outside. Get deferral and provider letters ready. Book her return around her study dates. Going offshore does not stop her coming back to finish her course.
Age and English. Priya is 27 with Superior English. That is the strongest age and English position for points: 30 and 20 federally, 300 and 200 in Victoria. It does not change her student visa. It is the reason I want her to finish the course and keep her pathway clean.
My caution. Being outside at grant is the part people miss. Lodging offshore and flying back early can cost the application.

Illustrative situation. The names and details are fictional.
The situation. Mei has nearly finished a coursework Masters. She likes research and wants a Masters by Research next, then a way to stay.
What I check first. A coursework Masters to a Masters by Research is the same qualification level. That means the new Student visa has to be lodged from outside Australia. I tell her this before she pays any deposit.
The options. Lodge offshore and plan the dates. Choose a supervisor and a proposal first. Research graduates have their own 485 rules, and I check them on the official page before she commits.
Age and English. Mei is 34, so she sits in the 25-point band federally (33 to 39) and scores 226 for age in Victoria. Her Superior English scores 20 and 200. Her age points will keep falling each year, so I plan the research route and the points route side by side.
My caution. A research Masters is a real commitment, not a shortcut. Supervisors decide, and I will not suggest it just to keep someone in the country.

Illustrative situation. The names and details are fictional.
The situation. Rohan is an IT graduate with a new 485. He says he will work first and think about permanent residence later.
What I check first. From 2 October 2026, 485 holders cannot go back to a Student visa from inside Australia. The clock starts the day the 485 is granted, so later is the most expensive time to start.
The options. Book a skills assessment early. Plan his English retest. Watch the state registration dates. Keep a 482 or a regional route open as a second plan.
Age and English. Rohan is 29. His age scores the federal maximum of 30 (ages 25 to 32) and 300 in Victoria (ages 20 to 29). At 30 the Victorian score drops to 286. His English is Proficient: 10 federally, 100 in Victoria. Superior would add 10 and 100. English is the one lever he controls.
My caution. A 485 is temporary. If the skills assessment or the English test takes longer than planned, his options shrink. Nothing here is a promise of an invitation.

Illustrative situation. The names and details are fictional.
The situation. Karim has five years of work as an operations coordinator. He does not know which occupation to nominate, or whether his experience will count.
What I check first. His occupation decides the assessing authority. He does not get to pick the easiest one. Some authorities also deduct years before they count experience. I look at the real duties, not the job title.
The options. Match his duties to an occupation on the list. Check the assessing authority and its evidence rules. Only claim the experience he can prove with documents.
Age and English. Karim is 30. He scores 30 for age federally and 286 in Victoria. English is Proficient. His work experience can add points, but only the years the authority accepts. A claim he cannot prove is worth nothing.
My caution. A positive assessment is one requirement. It is not permanent residence. Priority processing only means an answer sooner, not a better chance.

Illustrative situation. The names and details are fictional.
The situation. Tomas is 38 and works as a chef. His employer has offered to sponsor him. He wants to know how long he can stay, and what comes after.
What I check first. First I check that his occupation fits the stream and that the pay meets both tests. The Core Skills salary floor has been A$79,423 since 1 July 2026. Any job offer is not enough.
The options. A 482 lasts up to four years. After two years full-time on it, a permanent employer-nominated visa can open up. I map that route before he lodges.
Age and English. A 482 is not points-tested, so his age and English do not score here. They still matter later. The standard employer route to permanent residence has an age limit around 45, and he is 38. Better English also keeps more routes open. I confirm the exact age rule against Home Affairs before lodging.
My caution. He must never pay his employer to sponsor him. It is illegal for both sides and can cost him the visa. The government charge for the 482 is A$4,015 for the main applicant (as at 1 July 2026).

Illustrative situation. The names and details are fictional.
The situation. Diego is 43 and has worked full-time on a 482 for 22 months. His employer wants to keep him. He wants permanent residence before his age becomes a problem.
What I check first. The Temporary Residence Transition stream needs two years full-time on the 482. Since 1 July 2026 the salary floor is A$79,423 and the visa charge is A$6,140. I check his dates and his pay.
The options. Lodge as soon as he qualifies, and check early whether anything else, such as a skills assessment, applies to him. Priority sectors and onshore applicants have been processed first since 19 September 2026.
Age and English. At 43 his federal age score is 15, but this stream is not points-tested, so it does not count against him. The 45-year line is close, so I plan the lodgement around his birthday.
My caution. Two years full-time means two years full-time. A long unpaid gap can change the answer. I check his payslips first.

Illustrative situation. The names and details are fictional.
The situation. Amira is 33. A regional employer wants to sponsor her. She likes the offer. She is not sure what living outside a capital city means for the next five years.
What I check first. Regional conditions apply for the life of the visa. She cannot move to Melbourne once she has it. I read the offer and the conditions with her.
The options. Sponsorship for five years. If she stays regional and keeps her income up, the 191 can make her permanent after three. The government charge is A$6,140 for the main applicant (as at 1 July 2026).
Age and English. The 494 is employer-sponsored, so her age (25 federally) and English (10) do not score. Whether her age fits the visa's own rules is something I confirm against Home Affairs before she accepts. English still matters for her later options, so I tell her to keep it current.
My caution. Regional places and rules change every year. I confirm the current position before she resigns anything.

Illustrative situation. The names and details are fictional.
The situation. Hamza is 47 and an experienced chef. Standard visas have closed to him on age. His English score is a little short.
What I check first. Some regions have their own agreements with the Government. Endorsed employers there can sponsor on adjusted terms, sometimes with age, English or salary concessions. About 13 agreements were in place in 2026, including two in Victoria (Great South Coast and Goulburn Valley).
The options. Check whether his occupation and region have an agreement. Check which concessions apply. Find an endorsed employer.
Age and English. DAMA is not points-tested. Concessions on age and English are partial and depend on the occupation and the agreement. It does not mean no English.
My caution. Do not plan around a concession until it is confirmed for his occupation and region. I read the agreement terms first.
Illustrative situation. The names and details are fictional.
The situation. Elif is a 28-year-old electrical engineer with Superior English. She wants permanent residence without an employer or a state.
What I check first. Those two things give her real points. Age scores 30 for ages 25 to 32, and Superior English scores 20. That is 50 points before work, study or anything else. I then check what she can prove.
The options. Skills assessment first. Then count work and study points she can document. File an expression of interest. Run a 190 plan alongside, because state nomination places rose in 2026 to 2027.
Age and English. Age and English are the two factors she already has. The rest comes from evidence: work, study and a partner if she has one.
My caution. An invitation depends on the round and everyone else in the pool. Nothing I say is a promise. The government charge for the 189 points-tested stream is A$6,135 (as at 1 July 2026).

Illustrative situation. The names and details are fictional.
The situation. Dilini is a 31-year-old accountant on a 485 in Melbourne. She asked me which state to chase. I looked at two things first: her age and her English.
What I check first. Those two decide how many points she can still add. At 31 her age scores 30 federally and 270 in Victoria's test. At 33 it falls to 25 federally (minus 5) and 240 in Victoria (minus 30). Her age will not wait for her.
The options. Her English is Proficient: 10 federally and 100 in Victoria. Superior would add 10 and 100. That is the one thing she can still change. So we book the English test before anything else. A 190 nomination adds 5 points.
Age and English. Victoria published its 2026 to 2027 test on 13 October. The registration fee is A$60 and a nomination is A$180 (A$66 and A$198 with GST). Registrations from earlier years must be resubmitted when the program opens.
My caution. I cannot promise an invitation. As at 13 October the program had not opened, and places are limited. The English test was simply the best use of her time.

Illustrative situation. The names and details are fictional.
The situation. Samira is 35, lives in Bendigo and works as an accountant. Her points are 10 to 15 short of a 189 or a 190 invitation.
What I check first. A nomination for the 491 adds 15 points, against 5 for the 190. It is often the difference between waiting and being invited. I check her occupation against the regional lists first.
The options. Five years in regional Australia, with permanent residence through the 191 after three. Plan a 190 alongside, because places and rules change every year.
Age and English. At 35 her age scores 25 federally and 210 in Victoria. Proficient English scores 10 and 100. Superior would add 10 and 100. At her age, English is where I would put the effort.
My caution. The 491 is a provisional visa, not permanent residence. PR comes later, through the 191. The government charge is A$6,140 for the main applicant (as at 1 July 2026).

Illustrative situation. The names and details are fictional.
The situation. Kwame is 41. He is on a 491 and nearly three years in. He is worried about one low-income year and his age.
What I check first. The 191 has no points test, no new skills assessment and no age limit. So his age and English points do not count here. What counts is three years of regional life and income, shown with his tax notices. I read those first.
The options. Gather the tax notices and the evidence of living and working regionally. Lodge when he is eligible and before his 491 gets close to expiry.
Age and English. For the 191, the 15 points his age would score on a points test, and his Competent English, are not part of the assessment.
My caution. I need to see the low-income year before I say anything about it. The government charge for the 191 regional provisional stream is A$630 for the main applicant (as at 1 July 2026).

Illustrative situation. The names and details are fictional.
The situation. Ivan is 27, an IT professional with Proficient English. He does not know which state to aim for, or when each one opens.
What I check first. Every state has its own list, rules and timing, so I look at them one by one. Victoria uses its own points test. South Australia opened registrations on 22 October, but only for people already living and working there whose visa expires by 31 January 2027. New South Wales invites from SkillSelect, with no announced round dates. The ACT ranks applicants on the Canberra Matrix.
The options. Match his occupation to each state's list. Prepare one file that works for all of them. Set alerts for each opening. Fees differ too: the ACT charges A$25 for the Matrix and A$325 for a nomination, plus GST.
Age and English. At 27 his age scores 30 federally and 300 in Victoria. Proficient English scores 10 and 100. Those are strong starting numbers, but each state still ranks on its own rules.
My caution. Rules change quickly and each state publishes its own. I check the official page on the day. Nobody can promise a nomination.

Illustrative situation. The names and details are fictional.
The situation. Camila is 29 and overseas. Her partner Daniel is an Australian citizen. Someone told them to come on a tourist visa and apply here.
What I check first. That route is closing. Home Affairs lists a No Further Stay condition for all visitor visas among the changes being rolled out from September 2026. Many visitor visas already carry it. So I check the plan against the current rules before they book flights.
The options. Build a clear, consistent application from day one. Home Affairs says a complete application is decided faster, so check twice and submit once. Family applications made in Australia get the highest processing priority (Ministerial Direction 117, from 25 July 2026).
Age and English. A partner visa has no points test. Age and English points do not apply. Evidence of a genuine, continuing relationship does. The charge is A$11,710 for the main applicant (as at 1 July 2026).
My caution. Being married does not guarantee the visa. Home Affairs assesses whether the relationship is genuine and continuing. I will tell them what is realistic before they spend money.
